How is the Calmare device different from a tens machine?

Calmare has been awarded a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which identifies the device as a unique entity, unlike anything else in the market (i.e. a tens unit).

In regard to comparing the Calmare MC-5A machine to a tens unit, the two devices have marked differences:

The Calmare MC-5A device creates a low-energy electrical impulse which travels through the patient’s nerves delivering a “no-pain” signal to the brain using 16 distinct algorithms. This process “tricks” the brain that the area of pain is normal and eventually results in prolonged pain relief.

TENS units use high energy electrical impulses to block pain signals or distract the brain, but when treatment stops, the pain usually returns. It emits an electronic message over one single algorithm.

How does Calmare® work?

Calmare Pain Therapy Treatment uses a biophysical rather than a biochemical approach. A ‘no-pain’ message is transmitted to the nerve via disposable surface electrodes applied to the skin in the region of the patient’s pain. The perception of pain is cancelled when the no-pain message replaces that of pain, by using the same pathway through the surface electrodes in a non-invasive way. Regardless of pain intensity, a patient's pain can be completely removed for immediate relief.

Maximum benefit is achieved through follow-up treatments. The patient may be able to go for extended periods of time between subsequent treatments while experiencing significant pain control and relief. The period of time between treatments depends on the underlying cause and severity of the pain in addition to other factors.

Booster Treatments?

Each treatment steadily diminishes the pain intensity of the patient. During treatment, a patient is treated at a level that removes pain and doesn’t cause discomfort.

For patients with neuropathic pain: 10-12 daily treatments of 30-45 minutes based on each individual patient’s condition and response.

For patients with oncologic pain: 10-12 treatments are scheduled based on the patient’s pain control needs.

Calmare® is not recommended for patients who:

• Have a pacemaker or defibrillator
• Have metal implants or other orthopedic repairs
• Are pregnant
• Have a history of epilepsy or take anti-convulsant medications
• Have nerve blocks within the four weeks prior to initial treatment
• Have wounds or skin irritation in the affected area
• Have had a heart attack or severe arrhythmia in the last six months
• Are on active withdrawal from drugs and/or alcohol
• Have an implanted drug delivery system or spinal cord stimulator
